PUNISHMENT STILL NECESSARY IN OUR SOCIETY ?
Punishment is the emission of aversive stimuli to an unwanted behavior. Punishment can be negative or positive. Negative punishment involve spanking, threat or abuse while positive punishment could be time out or cost contingency.
Of recent, issues emanating from Punishment especially from school is of concerned to me. The school as an education setting won't achieved learning without punishment. School is made up of children with diverse backgrounds, cultures and attitudes which are to be shape or sustained. This can't be achieved without punishment or reinforcement. Some Pupils, Students and graduates are now affectively deficient because parents and interest groups don't want their ward to be punished again. Head of schools and teachers are now afraid to fulfilled punishment because children will be withdrawn or parents will come with family members to beat and harassed them. This has resulted to focus now just on cognitive domain of learning leaving affection and psychomotor domain for God maybe .
We are the reflection of our homes because the home is the first and most vital agent of socialization. Parents should strife to bring up their children and punish undesirable behavior because if they fail children will meet the wrath of the society. Don't get it twisted,Punishing a child for wrong doing show lot of love and not lack of love. Sparing the rod will result to teenage pregnancy, bag gangs, prostitution, terrorism etc which are now constantly rising day after day.
The society shouldn't be bias or thwart punishment. Bribery and other corrupts forms most be avoided. All offenders most be punished accordingly so they can serve as deterrent to others.
Finally am a supporter of punishment in our Nigeria Environment and other African countries , i cant extent to western nations because its not part of their culture, but if they care to listen, good Because punishment removes unwanted behavior, makes learning faster and its only option when reinforcer fails. Many of us are well behaved because the rod wasn't spared when our adolescent was taking over us.
Therefore punishment still remains a vital tool in our society.
