POLICE AND OKADA RIDERS CLASHED IN IBADAN

Someone members of the police force and commercial motorcycle riders known as okada have clashed in yemetu area of ibadan ,Oyo state following a misunderstanding between one of the okada and the police on patrol.

According to eyewitness the okada man was short dead by one of the police officer after he failed to give them fifty naira as usually demanded.

The news didn't go down well with other okada men in the area and they enforced to the police station attempting to set it ablaze but gunshots and tear gas from the police scared them away.

Residents were spotted running for safety as most didn't know what was going and some are alleged to have been hit by a stray bullet. One of the okada who spoke said "its a pity that this man is gone,he left his family healthy with hopes to return just like other days but unfortunately his life has been cut short just because of just fifty naira and who knows maybe he hasn't even make a dine for the day but the police who are always collecting like slay queens won't understand that."

The okada man further added that "the police need to maintain professionalism over handling of guns,this is not the first incident where a police will shoot at unarmed civilians over just a minor dispute. Am advising the general public to be careful when dealing with the police some of them are not well train while others tend to forget easily the training and allow emotions control them."

The police public relation officer have denied claims fifty naira is the cause of the problem,saying some members of the police went to a dry gene(ogogoro) joint to arrest a hoodlum and they were face with stiff opposition. Many have described the police statement as "untrue and just a cover up",adding that the whole okada are not stupid to pick up arms against the police to stop them from arresting a criminal. Despite the ambiguity in the statements what is so clear is that there is a misunderstanding.

Incidence of both personal and group clashes with the police who are often on different check points in Nigeria is rampant. The police demand fifty or hundred naira from road users with the language of "roja" and any one unable to roja is delayed unnecessary or charge with flimsy reasons.

Analysts have expatiated that the abuse attributed to the Nigeria police force is high because most of the officers end up there as just the available job and not the dream or desirable job. They postulate that such job would be of less dignity to them hence abuse set in.

The body of the deceased okada man was deposited in a mortuary after been walked about with by other aggrieved okada men.
