PERSONAL FACTORS THAT AFFECT LEARNING

Learning is the relatively permanent change in behavior that result from experience or skills.

That is for learning to take place there are three main facts; change in behavior,the behavior must be relatively permanent and it must result from experience.




They are some personal factors that can affect Learning
(1) :Anxiety
(2): Mental Ability
(3): Emotions
(4): Interest
(5): Aptitude
(6): Motivation




ANXIETY
Anxiety is the fear a learner exhibit to the experience or skill she is being exposed to or what she is to learn. It varies from a learner to another. Some students have a very high anxiety for mathematics while some have for other areas of education. The major cause of anxiety as a personal factor of learning is teacher's approach to teaching or influence of significant others that sees mathematics or some other subject as tough or less easy. Other than these influences Anxiety could also be natural. Anxiety influences personal learning because what you are afraid of doesn't have your interest and what doesn't have your interest can't change your behavior permanently.





MENTAL ABILITY
Mental ability refers to intelligence or how capable is the brain fit in a task of learning. Mental ability can be ascertain indirectly with intelligent test which is represented as intelligent coefficient (I.Q). When this I.Q is low in a person,it can slow or hinder his learning in a particular experience or skill while when its high it can facilitate learning smoothly.




EMOTION
Emotion is one internal state of being and involuntary physiological response to situations around the learner. Emotions can be sad,depressing or happy. When one is emotional down he can be refer to as sick and a sick learner find it difficult to learn because there wont be concentration but if a person is emotional okay at a given time,learning can be facilitated.




INTEREST
Interest is the absolute attention one pay to learning because its captivating. Learning will be quickly facilitated if its in area of ones interest and slow or may not take place if its against learner interest. Interest of a learner can be kill by teacher approach or significant others view about a particular experience or skill. However it can it can be motivated or reinforce by classically conditioned i:e pairing what interest the learner such as money or food to what its to be learnt Or awarding best graduating students jobs or houses.





APTITUDE
Aptitude refers to the inert abilities or intrinsic abilities a learner posses. It varies from individual to another though individuals may have similar aptitudes. The ability to learn also depends on aptitude. If a learner is placed in the area of experience or skill with high aptitude learning can be facilitated and if its in area of one zero or low aptitude learning will be difficult. This is the reason aptitude test was adopted in 1972 in a conference in Ibadan to be the criteria for admission into program of learning.





MOTIVATION
Motivation is the willingness, incentive or reason for learning. It can also be seen as determination to study. Learning is difficult without the willingness, reason or determination . Motivation facilitate change in behavior but when absent or low learning becomes difficult. Motivation can be build in learners by pairing what interest them to what they're to learn. It can also be debased by teachers approach,parents or peer groups.




SUMMARY
Interest,Aptitude,Anxiety,Emotions,Motivation,mental ability and among other personal factors can influence learning. They're standard psychometric ways of determining these factors to facilitate placement and counseling services hence effective learning.
