POWERFUL ASUU SUSPEND IT INDUSTRIAL ACTION
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended it industrial action embarked on the 13th of August for the inability of the Federal Government to meet the agreement reached in 2009 with the body.
ASUU President Prof Biodun Ogunyemi made the announcement in Abuja the Federal Capital territory after a closed door meeting with the Minister of Education and some other government dignitaries.
ASUU and the Federal Government resolved to set up a seven man committee to bring out means of actualizing the 2009 agreement between now and the end of October. The agreement contain the demands to include disputed registration of the Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company,gross underfunding and non funding of state universities, Arrears and implementation of Earned Academic Allowances, fractionalization of salaries in Federal Universities, release of fund for revitalisation of public universities as spelt out in the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding and the rest significant others.
Other Members of ASUU have called on the government to smoothly track the implementation of the lingering 2009 agreement to avoid hitch in Academic activities of Universities in Nigeria.
Students and parents have expressed delight on the news describing it as a welcome news but some expressed disappointment saying " We have been at home for more than a month now,i tell you solemnly as we have resumed its exams right away,even on normal circumstance we hardly exhaust the Course Outline let alone with the strike. Such issues should never come up again, its kills knowledge, contribute to failure and birth half done graduates".
There other respondent was of the view that "When will things be done in this Country Nigeria without strike, ASUU were on strike to get the agreement, they have been on series of strike to implement the agreement, i pray they don't go on strike again for this 7man committee to bring out it modalities of actualizing this agreement."
The parents who says her children are in the University of Calabar reacted thus "Congratulations and thanks to ASUU, Strong and powerful ASUU for suspending the strike , you have saved me some domestic shouts, my children who are all schooling in Unical will resume gladly immediately but i pray for accountability, dignity and responsiveness on ASUU as a body and the government to avoid further strikes."
The suspension of the strike means Academic activities begins in earnest as ASUU has directed lecturers to resume work tomorrow after chapter meetings today. Students are expected to resume back to school immediately.
Last week Non Academic Staff of University (NASU)also embarked on strike for the government to implement the demands reached with the body. Nigeria Public universities has been on total lock down since then. The call off of ASUU strike may not resumed academic activities fully as lecture rooms and offices are all locked by the striking NASU.
