DOES EVERY FAILED EVALUATION SIGNIFIES POOR TEACHING ?
Teaching is a process of imparting knowledge to a person in the role of a learner in order to facilitate a permanent change in behavior. It is done with the aid of instructional materials and effective use of teaching methods all embedded in a planned curriculum. The choice on the use of Instructional material or teaching method depends on the topic or content of the course.
Teaching has set objectives which are measured with Evaluation. Evaluation is the process of measuring the extent to which learning has taken place in students or significant others after a duration of exposure to teaching. Evaluation measure the change in behavior in learners . It can be done using Test, Exams , Class work , Assignment etc. There's formative & summative type of Evaluation. Formative is done during the teaching process while summative is done at the end of the teaching process.
The measurements of learning in students is interpreted and represented with numerals with a blueprint of motivating students and not debasing their ego.
Of recent many issues have risen from failed evaluation because of difficulty in fellow students, some teachers, parents & significant others to understand failure is first attempt in learning and a path of success. The aspect of repeated fail has also brought problems. However The first questions asked by concerned persons when any failed is why?. Does it mean your teacher don't know how to teach?
They are many reasons why people failed which i have reflected in some of my blog posts (The Disease call Failure) hence the focus here will be narrow to the afore topic.
Failure in Evaluation means scoring below the set mark. Formative Evaluation is usually at 10% or 30% then summative is at 70% in the Nigeria Scheme of work or curriculum. Teaching is a success if there's passed evaluation however it is regrettable expected that not everyone will pass but it is possible for everyone to pass. There is personal , social and environmental reasons why people failed but Most dominant reason why people failed in evaluation after teaching is the marking nature. Teachers develop marking scheme and hand it over to relatives or what's call "my boy" that have no knowledge of the course content. My boy may do well in multiple choice marking but not in essays since the writer didn't write in verbatim what's on the marking scheme. Bringing out an idea is like a way to the market, they're many ways to the market but the end point is market. Most boys don't understand that. "My boy" in charge and the non professional aspects of teachers like omission, awarding wrong scores, inability to control emotions, poor use of teaching methods and instructional materials, poor reading habits, lack of interest, health challenges, absent from classes, examination malpractice can all lead to failure in evaluation.
Its the joy of the teacher, students, parents and significant others to see a good scores after evaluation. Teaching and learning process should be efficient to cover the objectives. Evaluation should maintain integrity and professional standard always for it to really expressed the fulfillment of the teaching objectives. Conclusively not Evey failed evaluation signifies poor teaching,A good teaching can also be poorly evaluated. Students and teachers play a role in most failures just like in success. All things being equal poor scores in evaluation signifies poor teaching because evaluation is the mirror of teaching.
