THE IMPLICATION OF JAMB REDUCTION IN CUT OFF POINT

Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB)has announced that it cut off point for 2017 Academic Calendar for University is 120 while Polytechnic and Colleges of Education is 100. Schools are expected to comply with the new directives as Aptitude Test begins.

The reduction in cut off point means increase in number of students that will participate in the aptitude test across the country and maybe a corresponding increase in number of students that will be admitted.

Students seeking admission into higher institution of learning in Nigeria are on the increase yearly due to the high turn out from secondary schools, irregularities in the system and inability to pass the Post UTME despite the high score in jamb but The Registrar of JAMB, Ishaq Oloyede, has assured a Central Admission Processing System, CAPS, will be used to streamline admission processes among institutions in order to address challenges associated with the admission procedure.

Students who are to write the Aptitude test have express happiness on the reduction of cut off point describing it as a step to admission but their worries are if the school has the capacity to accommodate the esteeming population coming in or will it just be a means of getting so much money from the sales of Scratch cards and selecting few for admission. They call on the government to make appropriate measures.

The Post UTME exercise is schedule to end on January 31. First choice ends on October 15, While second choice ends on December 15.

The implications of the reduction is that more students will go for Aptitude Test Forms and less will be admitted even if more are admitted there would be no sufficient venue for classes like many schools are suffering now. The reduction is more of enriching to schools management. Another twist of it is that will the aptitude test cut off point of admission be at 120 or 100 too? If a student could score just 130 out of 400 in Jamb there's a high tendency that such student won't pass the aptitude test. Another angle is that will this Jamb Cut off point be permanent? It is rather a step to technically stop students from studying hard. The higher the cut off point, the higher the zeal to study and the lower the cut off point the lower the zeal to study. Hence even at a permanent 120 cut off point most students won't score up to that.  Hence there is need for Students to study hard else all the journey and money will be in vein.
