"CALABAR-IKOM/ODUKPANI ROADS ARE RITUALS OF ABANDONMENT"
In the past four days of this week, commuters were once again trapped in the Calabar-Ikom And Calabar - Odukpani Roads for several hours because of the dilapidated nature of the roads.
The road which is the only Major entrance and exit to Calabar experienced heavy traffick jam because it was blocked by a truck that fell accidentally around Odukpani local government area of the state.
Drivers and Passengers applying the road were trapped for uncordial days and hours thereby causing damages to perishable goods, aggression, conflicts among commuters and all forms of trauma.
The response of the Federal Road Safety Commission and other significant agency was described by Road users as very poor which is worse than bad. It took about 72hours for frantic intervention by them to get the road a road.
Social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc which has become the product of societal happening has not being disappointed like wise, as Cross Riverians who were trapped and their families, friends have reacted angrily about the deplorable phase of the roads with blames on the incumbent Governor of Cross River State, Prof Ben Ayade.
Critics who are always looking for any given opportunity to expressed their psychomotor domain of writing and talking have been actively active than active since the incident.
It is worthy to note that such Roads have been in bad shape since the administration of former Governor, Mr Donald Duke and it was transfer to Liyel Imoke. Imoke didn't disappoint the "Transfer Rituals" either to Prof Ben Ayade.
If nothing was done efficiently at the time Nigeria Economy was in good shape ,is it now the "Economy is a tabula rasa"?
If the roads were not properly done at high standard when Cross River State had oil well, is it now we have "nothing" to boast of?
If nothing was done when proclaims saints were in charged ,it is now the proclaim opposite is in charge?.
Calabar-Ikom, Calabar-Odukpani roads are federal roads, though many are daft about that and such daftness has placed the sole responsibility on Prof Ben Ayade excluding the Senators and Honorable representing the state who are by their position responsible for such projects but has sustain the ritual transfer and abandonment as well.
What always happen to the money allocated for such projects is as mysterious as yawning. Until the quoted Money for such roads and other projects is completely utilized to standard, we will keep marking sorrowful a "ritual of abandonment and transfer".
Cross Riverians have also pleaded for optimal maintenance of such roads and among others in the state to give this state a facial digital beauty.
It can be recall that as measures to solve the frequent road jams , Prof Ben Ayade has initiated the construction of A double lane Super Highway in the state which many feels he should have focus on up to standard maintenance of the only exit/entrance road in the state but that may be an unsatisfying disappointed to "ritual of abandonment & transfer".
There's need to break such rituals with the cultivation of good and responsible leadership. Leaders, lead to progress and not otherwise. The only secret is integrity, double up.
