CULTURE AND UNREST IN OUR SOCIETY

Culture is the way of life in a given community. It include norms, values, beliefs, language, etc. Culture varies from society to society i:e what's is culturally accepted in society A may not be accepted or existing in society B.

Cultural variation has contributed to struggle or unrest among communities in Nigeria.
Nigeria is a pluralized state, foreigners and we(Nigerians) must understand and accept  that fact for peace to exist among us But this hasn't been easy. Cultural differences has given room to tribal or communal clashes, hatred and jealousy among communities arising as a result of borrowing an element of culture, protecting or preserving it beliefs and heritage, transmitting it to the younger generation, politics or punishment of offenders.

Culture can't be borrowed in totality, only an element of it can be Borrowed. Borrowing an element of culture by a given society means it maybe assimilated and the existing one diffuses out but only when its accepted.  Borrowing an element of culture often contributes to unrest among members of that society.  While Some rejects it,others find it attractive. Presently our Dress style looks more of the western world, elders and even chief dress more of the white man style of jeans and T-shirts even on ceremonial occasion resulting to criticism from sound angles. Our language is facing extinction. Children tend to speak English language fluently now than their native language. Others that can't speak English language are either ridicule or seen as dull. In my community Obudu there was protest by responsible elders for the inclusion of "Bette" the prestigious language in the land that's dying in the school syllabus for student, pupils and even teachers in the area. Borrowing an element of culture often result to rejection by some members of the community that see it as elimination of their unique identity hence leading to unrest. No wonder am yet to see an element of culture being borrowed from us by the western world. Maybe they understands the effect better.

Cultural protection or preservation has caused unrest within the community and among communities. In the course of preserving beliefs or heritage members of the community has risen in arms among themselves. The belief that kingship reside in a particular family ,certain positions most be held by whom the cultures allows even when not fit, land allocation and ownership, the belief of revenge especially when killed by other communities,Beliefs of idols worship. Things taken as values have contributed to struggle cum unrest among cultures in Nigeria. Transmitting these heritage and beliefs has also pose problems. Parents,Peer groups and custodian of cultures try to foster beliefs on Children but they have tend to reject and only pick elements of culture that interest them.

Politics and creation of constituencies has also contributed to unrest among communities . members of the same culture tussle because of interest variation, zoning policy and later disappointment of elected leaders.this disappointment has often result to unrest in the society. Even the beliefs of members of some cultures towards politics has resulted to unrest.

Punishment is part of cultural measures to checkmate the behaviours of members. It has salvaged and combat cultural unrest but at the same time contributed to unrest.  Each culture has a mode of punishing defaulters either with find, time out, flocking, exile etc depending on the gravity of the offense. The use of punishment often faces bias, rulings by significant others are now with contempt. well doing and influential children are spared when they err hence leading to punishment contributing to unrest .

Cultural unrest will exist as long as man exist but the measures to reduce it shouldn't be jettisoned. There will always be a group of yes and no. What disagrees us should rather bring us together than separate us. Cultural Values and heritage gives us identity, let's not lose it. Politics is main to bring us together rather than separate us. Brotherhood is tested when our interests is alike for just one available opportunity. Punishment should be effective and efficient always.
