MAJORITY OF OBUDU RANCH RESIDENTS SUFFERS ULCER
Obudu Ranch Resort formerly known as Obudu Cattle Ranch is the destination of most tourists though currently been given less attention by the state government or investors. Ranch is situated in the northern part of Cross River State specifically in Obanlikwu Becheve ward though still bares the name Obudu Ranch Resort because Obalikwu Local Government Area was created out of Obudu.
The Economic activities in the place attracted indigenes to settle there gradually and soon became a community and expanded to communities. They are about six villages in the ranch all belonging to becheve ward.
The Ranch is 64km from Obudu town and has a height of one thousand five hundred meters above sea level. It takes 11KM from beneath to get the top through cable car or the motorable narrow road.
Indigenes in the area convey food items up from down the hill through motor or bikes to enable them eat as they believed the land up the ranch is not fertile for farming except bananas, plantains and pepper. Most indigenes goes to bed with empty stomach on days the food get finished. Some uses fresh grounded pepper as soup for eba. Pepper up there is so hot that two seeds are okay for a full pot of meal. Yet its been consumed by indigenes up there who feel they're used to it.Eating in most homes is once a day.
All these including the lazy attitude of the indigenes have contributed to increasing ulcer in the area but the most significant of it is the constant rainfall in the period of Jun to September. During this period only the brave survives . hunger increases with the rainfall. No one dares step out while its raining because of the cold nature of the area. The only hospital there knows the exact medicine to offer to indigenes even without carrying test. Its as obvious as that, many always complaining of stomachache, I got used to that as greetings.
I stayed in the area for a long period and i can regrettably say 90% of ranch indigenes are suffering from ulcer, the 10% free are mostly new born children. It was the grace of God that safe me of ulcer in ranch.
Many of the able and determined indigenes have gone out in search of greener pastures while those still around work as labourers in building construction or washing of guest cars. Some that are employed by the hotel never stop lamenting of no salary.
Concerns persons have called on the state government to resurrect the "abroad in Nigeria". They expressed concerns that even the federal government and private bodies should be welcome to revived the natural destination of people. They added Ranch shouldn't just be remembered during mountain race and forgotten there after rather it should be always given attention.
