NIGERIANS SHARED EXPERIENCES THREE YEARS AFTER BATHING WITH WATER & SALT TO PREVENT EBOLA
2014 will remain in the minds of West Africans and Nigerians precisely as it was a period they witnessed the deadly Ebola Virus that claimed many lives.
The virus came to Nigeria on July 20th following the visit of a Liberian Paul Sawyer to Lagos to attain ECOWAS summit in Calabar. It arrival soon caused panic despite the unlimited awareness on radio or television by the federal and state governments. The most remembered panic was the one Nigerians were told by who we don't know till date to bath Hot water and salt to be immune to the virus. Nigerians shared their experiences.
OBINA IKE: "I got a phone call from my friend in the village On this day 8/08/2014 at about 1:am. I declined from receiving at first because i knew it was a bad news,i said to myself whatever it is,i will get to hear in the morning but the continued calls got me changed my mind, the first thing i heard was you don hear? I said tell me who died? He then broke the rumored news that Ebola is now airborne,i should go bath with hot water and salt to prevent it. I did hear people bathing from the background. Calls kept coming from even educated elites. I had no option than to bath with hot water & salt."
Ugbe Edward: Each time i reflect on this,i just imagine how stupid i was all because of fear,Ebola was dreaded mehn, i bath twice that day so comfortable,at night and early in the morning before leaving the house".
Unimke : "I didn't bath,am too mentally efficient cum wise than that but i was seen as a deviant that day,I was seen like am gonna die the next minutes. If we do the wrong thing in trying to survive it may easily lead us to where we were avoiding. The was reported issues of death in some states of Nigeria that period".
Awa ube: "Its an unforgettable day, salts became a scarce product, the fire set could roast the Ebola virus, people were bathing in turns, I bowed to the pressure from significant others and bath,my body itched me for a week,my skin became so rough".
Timothy Adebayo: "What amazed me was the speed at which such rumors sprayed within 12:am and 5:am, neither me or my household didn't bath but i got calls even from people that will say no airtime,it was a sleepless night for almost every one in Nigeria".
Adamu Hassan: "I didn't hear the news in time because my phone was off , neighbors knocked my door heavily ,i step out with my Cutlass thinking its some hoodlums disturbing the neighborhood, i was told to quickly bath with salt and water to prevent Ebola,I quickly did without hesitating, its funny but not that moment,my heart was beeping with fear. Ebola was dreaded because it had no cure then".
Akpan Akan: "Ebola outbreak affected my bush meat sales, the business collapsed drastically,i kept praying it comes to an end, thank God it did but my customers were still avoiding bush meats, some still do till now, i didn't bath with salt & water,I wasn't afraid".
Telemun Ayisa: "I wasn't afraid of Ebola because i don't fear death what really sadden me was how the virus came and how the cure came too. Man is wicked,I pray for such not to happen again".
Bello: "Reflecting on Ebola can't be complete without maximum credits to Then President Goodluck Jonathan led government for the prompt measures in combating the virus out of Nigeria. Thank you Mr President for saving Nigerians of another Salt & Water bath".
Ogar Imelda: "I so bath that day,i drank salty water too,Every member of My household did thank God we weren't hurt like the 5 death cases i heard in Plateau State".
Ugar Schot: "I didn't allow my family to bath,we just gathered ourselves and started praying though the fear was high even witches & wizards were afraid of Ebola".
Oscar Joe: "I bath with salt & water but what i didn't do was to tyre red leaves around the waist and run around Plantain stems like i heard next after the bath experience".
Heart touching and funny experiences but Ebola Eradication in October of that same year 2014 is an obvious fact that nothing last forever, whatever ha a beginning must have an end. May the souls of those who died of the virus continue to Rest In Peace.
