TYPES OF MARRIAGE YOU MAY HAVEN'T KNOWN

Marriage is a culturally acknowledged  and Legally acceptable union between a man&woman which places responsibilities or roles on both partners. Marriage is willingly, it involves fulfilment of certain rites and there's usually commitment to sexual intercourse. 



Traditional,Court and Religious marriages are the recognised instruments of establishing the union in Nigeria.



The aims why people marry is for procreation , companionship , social status and the sake of inheritance. Marriage is the basis or origin of a family and there is expected behavior in the society from married couples hence the need for marital adjustment is vital in any type of marriage.




In the present society most people only knows monogamy & polygamy as a type of marriage but there's existence of other forms of marriage such as ghost marriage, arranged marriage, Levirate Marriage, Widow inheritance marriage, Sororate Marriage, Endogamy and Exogamy.




GHOST MARRIAGE
Ghost marriage is a type of marriage that involves the fulfilment of marital rites by the to be husband's family for a late relative who died without a wife. In this type of marriage the wife don't get to meet the husband but bares his name. Such marriage is intended to keep the name of the deceased bachelor relative alive. The wife can be inherited by any of the living relatives but children belongs and bares the name of the deceased husband. It is still practice in some part Africa and India.





ARRANGED MARRIAGE
Arranged Marriage as the name implies is a form of marriage where the to be husband's parents and significant others decide on the choice of a wife including the preparations such as visiting the to be wife's family and fulfilment of marital rites for their Son patiently waiting for his bride. The rational behind this type of marriage is to avoid the Son marrying from a wrong family or making a poor choice of wife i:e marrying a bad wife. It is regarded as Endorgamy . Arranged marriage is still practice in Some cultures in Nigeria.




LEVIRATE MARRIAGE
Leveret marriage is a type of marriage that involves assigning a widow to a close relative of the late husband. The new husband is only seen like a caretaker and widow is not accepted as the wife of the new husband. The children that comes fourth belongs to and bares the name of the late husband and the new husband is seen as just a Social Father. Leveret marriage is aimed at compensating the husband relatives if death occurs.




WINDOWS INHERITANCE MARRIAGE
Window Inheritance marriage is a union between between the wife of a deceased husband i:e a widow and a member of the late husband's family. The widow is consider as a material to be inherited at the demise of the owner. It is similar to Leveret Marriage but differs in the sense that the wife belongs to the new husband . Window Inheritance marriage is still practice in some communities in Nigeria and Africa.




SORORATE MARRIAGE
Its a type of marriage of marriage where a man goes back to the wife's family at death of his wife to get a replacement. The sister of the wife is offered as a new wife but in the absence of any sister or refusal the bride price is refunded back to the man .




ENDOGAMY & EXOGAMY
Its a type a form of marriage that restrict marital relationship to a unique group,social class or Families in the society. The rationale between this is usually for the sustenance of cultural values, beliefs and the purity of social class. E.g is a Prince marrying from his kingdom or a royal family.
EXOGAMY is the opposite of Endogamy. It places no restrictions of marriage to any group. People are free to marry from any place of their choice.




MONOGAMY
Its a type of marriage that involves one man and one woman. Its so associated with Christianity. Monogamy increases affection between partners and reduces interpersonal clashes in marriage. It is the most practice in this part of the world.



POLYGAMY
Polygamy is a a type of marriage that a man marries more than one wife. Such marriage increases conflicts between wives cum children and contribute to enormous responsibility on the man though polygamists will always argue against any weakness. 




POLYANDRY
Polyandry is the opposite of polygamy. A marriage where a woman marries more than one men. The men involved understand the marriage they are into. Children that comes out may belong to the woman,the first husband or what the gods or DNA decide depending on the set cultural premised. There's often conflict associated with polyandry that's why its been prohibited in some land while some land only permit the woman to marry more men as she can but from a particular family.




In Nutshell, Marital adjustment is very vital in any form of marriage. Adjustment to finance, sexual intercourse, in-law influence and Companionship to avoid frictions in the prestigious institution.
