Marriage is a union between man and woman. They're many types of marriage and Polyandry is one of it. Polyandry is a type of marriage that involves a woman marrying more than one husband. Polyandry is predominantly practice in Africa and Nigeria is not left out. The rationals behind its to have many husbands who will assist them in farming ,fending or take care of their wealth.

Of recent recent polyandry is rarely practice in this part of the world Nigeria because its seen like improper, the women are labeled promiscuous or the hitches involve in the fulfilment of marital rites or there after. Country like China have forbade the practice of polyandry under the family law because of the conflicts recorded though still illegally practice in the area.

In a polyandrous home,the woman may not necessarily live with all the men but can visit them at will. The men involved knows and understand the marriage they are into. Women that are polyandrous are mostly beautiful,high libido or wealthy in the society. The wife or man is free to shoulder responsibilities of marital rites like groom price or bride price as long as there is concession from both parties.

The major misunderstanding arising in the minds or thoughts of people about polyandry is who owns the child or children since many men are involved. Some believe a woman always knows who impregnated her and some counter with the question what if she sleeps with more than one of the men in a day?. Let's relate it to polygamy, in polygamy a man marries more than one wife and he owns the children hence the woman should own the children in polyandry? Well,its varies from culture to culture, some set out rules were established to guide the institution of polyandry because of the increased conflicts associated with it. In some cultures the children belongs to just the woman and bares the woman's or the woman's paternal name, Some cultures allows the woman to decide which of the husband owns the children while in some cultures the children belongs to the first husband of the woman. There's existence of the decisive power from the gods too on which of the men owns the child which is announced by the "Ezemou" after some rituals.

In some society,its part of the marital fulfillment to state clearly that the child belongs to the woman and any struggle for the child by the man goes contrary to the norms of the society.
