COUNSELING A CONDOM TO ACADEMIC FAILURE

Guidance and Counseling is important to academic like the bible is important to Christians. It is an assistance render to a person in the name of a client for self development, self realization, self fulfillment and self actualization. Guidance and counseling started with Vocational guidance in 1911 by Frank Parson in the United State of America during the depression days. It has since grown and widespread across the world to include Educational Guidance and Persona-Social Guidance which makes up the three scope of guidance and counseling.

The word guidance and counseling is not strange to an average man in the street but just few can tell the difference. Guidance provide ready made solution while counseling exposes you to understand the problem then you take the decision or you can refer to it as Guidance provide "ready made cloths" while Counseling assist "you to sow the cloths yourself". The need for each lies on the matter or problem and stress the fact that Counselors should be dynamic in approach but strictly base on the principles that include it is for all irrespective of religion background, race or culture, it does not involve cohesion i:e client should never be compel for counseling, It is render to all school level, It is highly confidential i:e information about client are highly confidential and only release to authorized personnel,it does not solve all man problems etc.

Counseling is important to all aspect of man's life but i will limit the focus to academic which is not main for just students alone but parents, guidance and significant others to know the worth of counseling.

Academic is a series of teaching learning activities in a school with the objective of a permanent change in behavior. The role counseling plays to sustain the objective of a school is like the work of a condom,it safes the students from failure,it sustain teachers lesson plan,it makes parents understand their children abilities. How does this work? They are Guidance and Counseling services which are intended to achieve this and they include Appraisal Service, Placement Service, Counseling Service, Information Service, Follow-up Service.

Information Service is the process by which a counselor collects, collate, analyze, interpret and utilized figures and facts collected about a student to assist in making Educational choice that's the course of study. It is done by considering or reviewing the student academic performance pertaining to the three domains of learning in order to assist him understand the need for adjustment or venture into Science, Art or Social science Area and also to enable the teacher focus more on the student weaknesses ,guiding against parental influence to a course of zero aptitude hence a condom to failure.

Appraisal Service involves the use of psychometric Instruments to collect data about a students to enable him and significant others make sound Educational decisions, it can be administer in the form of Test e.g of this is Aptitude Test, Intelligence Test or what is known as Common Entrance. The relevance of appraisal counseling service is that it places students in area of aptitude or ability hence a Condom to failure if otherwise i:e disregard like the alleged corrupt practices we have now it will give birth to failure and frustrations.

Placement Service is the process of helping students to enter into a new environment be it classroom or the school generally with the objective of making necessary adjustments and maintain healthy relationship with the students and teachers. It is known to the layman as Orientation. A student properly oriented by a counselor will do well in his new environment hence a condom to failure.

Follow-up Service involves finding out if a students is really doing well in the area he is placed, the need to make adjustments, recommendation or motivation. It is refer to the layman as evaluation. Evaluation sustains effecting learning hence a condom to failure.




Counseling Service is a continues process render in a school. it can be done also by teachers who are also seen as councilors because it is part of the principle of Teachers Registration Counsel of Nigeria (TRCN) and Nigeria University Commission (NUC) that a student teacher must offer Guidance and Counseling course known as Guidance and Counseling for Teachers before graduation. Most schools have a professional counselor who assist students solve their Emotional, Social , Family,students to students problems , how to use the librabry, secret to earn good grades in exams, the need to draw closer to God, to avoid all forms of deliquencies etc hence making learning effective and restore my view of counseling a condom to failure but some  students don't even know who a counselor is nor the need , am a victim of this in my secondary school but i may pardon the fact it was then but sadly behold even some schools in the rural and urban areas till date don't know the meaning or have a professional counselor hence contributing to students failure or ending up in areas of zero aptitude.

They have been remarks that despite counseling being a condom to academic failure there is still failure. Yes that is true ,Just like Condom breaks when not properly use and the consequence becomes severe so does Counseling has consequences when it fails but it is we that have contributed to it failure by manipulating it to the advantage of students,school and parents. Counselors are now bend to influence their recommendation about a student to place him/her in a given area even not suitable for the student because parents want their ward to be there and schools are bend to do it else there is withdrawal of the students or the fact the parents have paid heavily, counselors are bend to do as the school instructed else there will be a sack letter or their view will be jettison. However outside these alleged practices student success doesn't come from a councilor alone but himself and the teacher with the focus to his academics and determination to learn. However a student counselled stand a better chance to be academically successful and also happily doing in the society than a student who is without counseling but they are however few exceptions.

Condom Safes,Counseling is a Condom to academic failure. Where there is no Counselor, there are more problems and failure is predominant. The notion of failure is not just failing a subject but being in an area you don't have happiness ,you could do well in a course but there is no happiness and that's failure because you will abuse the area. The services of a counselor should be employ in all schools level in Nigeria, it should be made compulsory by The Ministry of Education and the schools should desist from manipulating the professional assistance of a counselor. Don't forget Counseling is a Condom to failure, wear it always!!.
