RETIRED AIR VICE MARSHALL DROWN IN LAGOS LAGOON

A retired Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Martins Olufunsho has drowned in a lagoon just by the University of Lagos Waterfront end of the Mainland bridge late Saturday after accident involving his vehicle.

AVM O. Martins who until his demised lives in United Kingdom with his family, arrived in Nigeria just last week for the burial of his friend wife and intended to go back this week.

His SUV is said by an eye witness to have Summersault about four times after it collided with another vehicle before entering the lagoon killing him and his personal driver.

Retired AVM Ofulunsho was on his way from a meeting to his home, park view estate ,Ikoyi at about 11pm on Saturday before the accident happened.

The driver of the other vehicle is said to have ran with his vehicle.

Staffs of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency with experience assistance of Fisher Men brought the vehicle with both bodies stuck by sit belts out of the lagoon.

This is the third consecutive weekend bodies would be brought out from the Lagos lagoon this month. Some Lagosians prayed in churches yesterday for safety upon family, friends and the general public especially in this period of mysterious lagoon death.

A Lagosian who didn't want her name to be mention said "Each time i hear of Lagoon death, the words of Oba of Lagos just before the 2015 election comes to my mind. We should be careful of what we say especially when in authority. May all the souls departed rest in peace."

It was reported in 2015 that Oba of Lagos said "Vote for Ambode as Governor or drown in the lagoon". A statement that attracted wide criticism then with many Nigerians calling for his arrest.

Manager of a hotel owned by Mr Martins in Lagos where the meeting took place denied rumors of his boss and driver being drunk as a result of the accident.

However some of the Fisher Men said the accident resulted from over speeding as a vehicle maintaining normal speed limit can't Summersault four times.

Commuters in Lagos have been warned by Federal Road Safety Corps to maintain speed limit in the area. They blamed high consumption of alcohol mostly on weekends to be the reason for most accidents.
