TEACHERS: PRESSURE AGAINST PUNISHMENT HAS KILLED DISCIPLINE IN SCHOOL

A group of teachers in Calabar, the Cross River State Capital has expressed their view about Education system in Nigeria at 57 As part of the world teacher's day celebration. The teachers were of diverse views about the present system of Education in the giant of Africa.

They blame the government and Education stake holders about poor unfavorable policies and finance of Education project describing it as a setback to the achievement of the nation educational goal.

One of the most concern by teachers is the pressure against punishment of students from parents and interests groups. An act they believe has killed discipline in school across the country.

Speaking expressively in Calabar, Mr Ugbe Amos a teacher in one of the government secondary school said ," I have always said discipline in schools is death. The only domain in focus in schools now is cognitive. No teacher is ready to use a cane or any other form of punishment on a child again because the child parents, relatives and even ancestors will arrive the school in the next minutes Or the teacher receives a quarrel from his employer. These has contributed to kill discipline in school as students even fight their teachers now. Parents and the general public need to understand punishment is really part of learning. If we fail to punish a child that misbehave,we are contributing to kill the affective domain. Killing the affective domain means your child is literate not educated. If you influence the teacher to fail, the society will surfer."

Mr Ugbe further advise that his fellow teachers should apply professionalism when dealing with students ."my fellow teachers please there is need to apply professional ethics despite the pressure against punishment as it will go a long way to match up irregularities in schools. I know our job is not lucrative, at times we come to classroom hungry but its not the children fault, don't transfer aggression to them at any little offence, some could be teachers children too who are more hungry."

One female teacher who also expressed her mind said "School is vested the role of developing the three domains of learning in a child; Cognitive(mental) ,Affective (behavior) and Psychomotor (skill) but the major interest now is just on Cognitive development ignoring the other domains, that's why you see people who are learned fight and still quarrel in the market square, steal, abused offices , walk naked, join bad gangs, etc. The school is the reflection of the society,if the school must stand for what its main for,the society in general has a bigger role. Most of us are what we are today because both at home and in the school we were never spared when we messed up."

Last year in Federal Government Girls Secondary School in Calabar ,a teacher was brutally beaten by parents who are DSS Personnel for exercising punishment on a female student. Teachers in the school embarked on a stay at home action until the matter was later settled amicably. They have been reported news of teachers assault across the nation as well and all which teachers have described today as lack of discipline due to absent of punishment. They therefore call for a healthy collaboration between parents and significant others with the schools to achieved a permanent change in behavior.

Others called for a harmonious relationship among teachers in Nigeria as teacher's day in this part of the world is mostly celebrated by secondary and primary schools teachers.
