About 12 persons have been quarantine in Bayelsa State after being infected with A viral disease known as Monkey-Pox. Monkey-Pox is a lesser like unit of small pox and the outbreak is the first of it kind in the state and Nigeria at wide.
Among the 12 quarantine is a medical Doctor and a nurse while efforts are on to reach so many others who may have come in contact with the infected victims. Monkey-pox is a viral disease that affect the skin and is acquired through contact with the fluid of infected animals like Monkey , Rats, Antelope, Squirrel and other bush animals. It can also be transmitted from an infected person to another.
The diseases is less deadly compare to Small Pox and has headache, fever, exhaustion, muscle aches and swollen lymph as symptoms.
The Bayelsa State commissioner of Health E. Etebu announced that sample of the virus has been sent to World Health Organization quarters in Senegal to ascertain possible solution.
Reactions have follow the outbreak with many Nigerians finding it surprising about the existence of such disease. One lady who spoke as Miss Victoria said, "its a pity to hear of this,it is either this outbreak or that all from bush animals, innocent bush animals. how those animals get in contact with the virus is still a question most average minds keep asking. I am force to believe it is a fail or uncontrollably research of man but am rest assured it will be over soon like others, Everything comes and go except God and his words."
The viral disease has already affected the sales and consumption of bush meat in the state and in some part of the country. Most Residents In Bayelsa were spotted wearing long sleeves to avoid contact with the fluid of infected persons.
While across the country the disease is still strange to many who have misunderstood the name Monkey-pox to be another military oppression or an entertainment vibe.
Monkey-pox outbreak was first recorded in Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970 after a group of monkeys kept for research were infected. The disease sprayed to the United State of America in 2003 following a shipment of infected animals and about 47 persons across the states were infected. It can be mostly prevented by maintaining personal healthy hygiene and avoiding contacts with animals feces.
Monkey-pox has no known specific treatment yet but can be treated with smallpox vaccines and other related antiviral drugs.
