MOTIVATION: ZEDICUS PIRO AND LECTURER

LECTURER: "Zedicus Piro you did assignment without reference, i will fail you."
ZEDICUS PIRO: "Sir Assignment is an assessment right ?"
LECTURER: "Yesssssssss"
ZEDICUS PIRO: "Examination is also an assessment right?"
LECTURER: "Yessssssssssss"
ZEDICUS PIRO: "So if i write exams, i should include references right?"
LECTURER: "Get out of my Class, Zedicus Piro, i said leave my class".
ZEDICUS PIRO: "With all gratitude Sir, i won't leave because i have paid my fees, done my registrations and you're the one indebted to me now".

This is the extent to which the call for references in assignment now brings hullabaloo among Lecturers & Students with likelihood of failure for the later.

Assignment & Examination are test of the understanding of course content after a period of judiciously implementing the course objectives.

The frequent demand of references in assignment & Invalid assignment questions aimed at enlarging lecturer's wallets have contributed to kill the originality cum innovation so needed in learning environment as students take a speedy way to the internet in search & copying of "materials" as it's fondly called.

They're rules guiding assignment which references may be part of but rules are main for students and not students for rules hence with such decrease in innovation from students, it is essential to review such rules.

If assignment must carry references then why is secondary and primary school an exception? Reflect back to secondary school and primary, you will agree that's a good example of assignment conducts.

They are some Gifted Students that just need exposure to the course content and they can vomit satisfactory ideas to any valid question. Many of such students are face with poor scores in assignment because references are absent while some in the quest to pass just paste any reference for the lecturer satisfaction.

In develop countries where Nigeria draws her effective Education style from, there's existence of a mechanism call "turn-in" that monitors even student's assignment hence the birth of originality, which could even be the reason they are far better academically & innovative than this part of the world.

My humbly opinion is that, references on Assignment shouldn't be compulsory. If it must be, then it should be main for those who copy from the internet or text books. If it has been main for this, then it has not been applied well by the lecturers & students. Let this be a wake up call.

Education is innovation, kill or disregard not the little innovation of young vibrant brains, not even this.
