INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE SOCIETY

   Social media is a technological platform that helps link people together,share their thoughts, events,advertise products or businesses. It includes apps like Facebook,WhatsApp,Twitter,Instagram,2go,Snapchat etc. 

Of recent the high usage of social media has prompted me to tag it a new planet & a home of societal happenings.
Over billions of people worldwide uses socially media and over 20millions of Nigerians have access to social media especially Facebook and WhatsApp. 

 The hours and how preoccupied Nigerians are with social media is worth writing on to effect a change in some minds. 

 By signing up for any social media it means you have accepted the terms & policies though majority don't go through it hence resulting to it misused and punishment. Recently an Algerian was arrested and convicted in Algiers for posting a dangling photo of a baby in a 15storey building on Facebook just to attract 1000 likes. He was sentence to two years in prison for endangering the safety of the child.

So many have gotten their comeuppance for social media misused especially in Nigeria. These days everyone want to be on social media without understanding the restrictions. Just like they're exist don't and do in the society so does social media.

 

Social media can influence positively or negatively depending on the content of things read,how and when we use it.

Things read has prompted some people to join terrorist groups such as ISSIS ,Boko Haram,cultism,teenage pregnancies and increase in delinquencies in the society. Reading is hypnotizing and we are what we constantly read or write.

Social Media is encouraged to be use at our leisure though those addicted to it see every moment as leisure. 

 

Social Media has become an influencing factor to academic performance of students .its now a habit for some students to be online while in lecture venues,library and even exams. Students spend more of the time chatting instead of reading their books. This is highly distractive,low grades in exams,failure and lack of knowledge on a content of a course is often the resulting cases. Academic need absolute attention,focus and determination.

Getting likes,comments and attention on social media has also influenced many to take pictures even in areas they are not suppose to like accident areas that demands we try to save lives. Social Media has somehow killed the indepth humanity care for oneness in most hearts. Even though they claim they care with beautiful and heart touching writeup on images of the victims on Facebook, that's bullshit .

We can also not take away the number of friends social media has earned for most people. Infact some couples today met on Facebook. Social media has indeed been influential to the beginning of most friendships. Though people now used it to get and abused relationships.

On the society generally ,most people now tend to lack the facial boldness to express themsleves as they prefer to talk through social media chats. The society have copied and adjusted to lifestyles of celebrities that walks about naked or post pictures of every move about them. Most people now dress half naked to post on different social media platforms to attract whatever ,God knows!. individuals, groups or unions without social media account are ridicule as 18th century folks or unions now. Social media has become a means of societal communication. Though many in the society have fallen victims to imposters resulting to dubbing them of treasures.

Socially media itself is not bad,its what,how and when we use it that becomes bad. Just like other factors in the society social media has influenced both negatively and positively the lives of it users. Users should always strife to make it a healthy platform by sharing healthy,inspiring and educative thoughts.
