POPE FRANCIS TO SUSPEND NIGERIAN PRIESTS
Pope Francis has told a collection of Nigerian priests to accept the appointment of a bishop of Ahiara diocese of Imo State made in 2012 or face suspension for disobedience. The Pope said "the people of God are scandalized by what has happened".
Its unusual for the pontiff to issue this kind of threat. The president of Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama who was also in the meeting in Rome said the pope was unhappy with the scenario and he could see the pains in his heart because his children are going in a different direction.
Bishop Peter Okpaleke was appointed by the former pope Benedict XVI as the bishop of Ahiara diocese but clergies in the diocese has refused to accept him because he is from the neighboring Anambra State. The clergies have written petition insisting on a bishop from the Locality because they are also just.
Archbishop Ignatius said the "catholic church has been operating like this for years and its not going to change now because they want a bishop from their place. The pope needs absolute obedience ".
The clergies of the diocese are yet to respond to the ultimatum .
