COCOA FARMERS IN NIGERIA LAMENT OVER DRASTIC PRICE FALL
Cocoa farmers in Nigeria have lamented over the drastic fall in the price of cocoa this year.
Sharing the worries some farmers in Ikom local government area of Cross River State said its really sad and disappointing because its a big lose that they didn't see this coming at all.
A bag of cocoa as of today 10/08/2017 was sold between thirty thousand naira(#30,000) and thirty three thousand naira(#33,000)as against the former price that ranged between Seventy thousand naira and eighty eight thousand per bag.
The major worries of the farmers is how to pay back the loan they got to facilitae the farming. One of the farmer who spoke said "my worry is how to pay back the loan, I borrowed up to five hundred thousand, its a practice here in Ikom ,some of my colleagues borrowed more than that while some less than the amount i borrowed, there's no profit at all, some of us may be in prison any time soon if we are unable to pay".
The reason for the fall in price of cocoa is understood by them to be the so availability of it in the international market. Ivory Coast and Togo were reported to have opened it storehouse of cocoa,a practice they do every four years.
