WHO COUNSEL A COUNSELOR ?
Counseling is a professional assistance render to a person in the role of a client to achieved self development, self fulfilment or self actualization. Counseling began because of the unrest in the society, increased emotional problems, increased delinquencies, job hunt, poor study habits etc. It started in the United States of America in 1911 with Vocational Counseling by Frank Parson. Counseling began in Nigeria in 1958 at St. Theresa College Ake-Ado a village near Ibadan by group of Reverend Sisters.
Counseling is divided into three scopes Vocational, Educational and Personal Social. Guidance and Counseling are jointly used and all aimed at helping the client but the obvious different is that guidance provides ready made solution while Counseling make you understand the problem then you take the decision or you can refer to it as guidance gives "ready made cloth" while counseling assist you "to sow the cloths yourself".
Guidance & Counseling techniques are acquired over a long duration of training. A counselor is he who has the license to practice counseling services. Counseling services can be rendered in Schools, Prisons, hospital, industry and churches/mosques (religious counseling) with basic principles that it doesn't involve cohesion i:e compelling any to go for counseling, it render to all, it doesn't provide solution to all man problems, confidential of client's information etc.
The counselor is a human being too with problems, who then counsel the counselor? Let me relate this to the question who threat the Medical Doctor? Himself or other specialist Doctor right ? That's applicable to a Counselor too. However guidance & counseling is divided to Objective and Subjective Counseling. Objective counseling is the assistance render to yourself while Subjective counseling is the assistance render to a client. A good counselor should be able to provide objective counseling,it is a vital foundation for subjective counseling because it gives more empathy i:e put you in the shoe to understand and deal with your client (Subjective Counseling). However there's referral principle in counseling, A counselor with unresolved problems can seek the help of another counselor. That's a counselor could also a client.
Conclusively, a Counselor counsel a counselor. Whether it is from yourself as a counselor or another counselor its still counseling from a counselor. Seek the services of a counselor, don't die in silence, a problem shared to a qualified counselor is half solved.
