DEPLORABLE CALABAR-IKOM ROAD LEAVES TWO DEAD,OTHERS INJURED
The deplorable condition of Calabar- Ikom high way which is the only road connecting the state capital and Central/Northern part of Cross River State has recorded so many accidents with the recent one leaving two dead and others seriously wounded.
The 14 seaters vehicle as reported by eyewitness fell into a deep section of the road that was washed by rain for sometime now in Iwuru, Biase local government Area of the state on Tuesday.
The eyewitness narrated the driver was on normal speed limit but didn't stop as they signaled him to slow down like other drivers do when approaching the spot as a safe passage through it. They added that it was obvious the driver was applying the road for the first time.
The vehicle fell into the gully and as residents rushed to assist, part of the gully section keel over on them leaving one dead at the spot and the other later died in the hospital while others sustain injury but the driver is in good health.
The accident later resulted to further accident involving a blue Toyota car that was coming in the other direction as the driver lost control into the bush while trying to avoid a head to head collision or falling into the same pit. Three people in the vehicle were seriously injured and taken to the nearest hospital before they were later refer to University of Calabar teaching hospital Calabar.
Road users laments about the deplorable phase of the road that cut lives short. One lady who spoke annoyingly said "This road is so bad because we have bad and not poor governance. Poor is a bit fair but bad describes perfectly it worse condition.There's no week accidents are not recorded on that road and people would blame it for witchcraft,NO, it is our government that is the witchcraft. I have lost my only brother on the road, something right really need to be done by the state government especially that Biase and Obubra axis."
Accidents on the road has often resulted from one driver trying to avoid potholes, overtaking wrongly or driver's carelessness. There's no one that have pass through the road that doesn't have a sad story to tell.
It is known that in the 90s, traveling from Calabar to Obudu local government area was just two hours as compare to 8 hours now because of the bad roads. Paracetamol and other pain killers are the demand of many once they arrive home.
Cross Riverians have called on the senators representing the state who are yet to do any major or known minor projects to put heads together and ensure a betterment of the road so it can be call a road.
The road is however under construction by cemetech but the standard and slow speed of the work is said to equal the money invested on it. Commuters especially public transports drivers who are always rushing to arrive and reload are advise to maintain speed limit, drive very carefully and slowly always as it is better to arrive home late than to arrived the hospital or mortuary.
