EFCC PROBES CROSS RIVER STATE GOVERNMENT UTILIZATION OF PARIS CLUB FUND
Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has begun the investigation into the alleged misappropriation of the Paris bail out fun paid to the Cross River State Government months ago.
The investigation commenced following a petition sent to the anti corruption agency which is signed by over 80 persons suspected to it is mostly pensioners and those fighting the "just course" in the state. The petition has it the Paris bail out fun was not use for the purpose ordered by the Federal Government.
The Federal Government had disbursed billions to each state in june and directed the Paris club fund be used to settle issues of salary, gratuity and pension pending in the states. Cross River State is reported to have received 11 Billion naira and 6 Billion on the first and second tranches respectively. The state Governor Prof Ben Ayade had expressed judicious use of the money.
Officials of the EFCC are reported to have arrived Calabar two days ago to investigate the matter. Pensioners behind the petition were question by the officials and later met with the accountant general in closed doors.
The state government had in August issued a statement that all pension and salary debts were fully paid to those concerned but the news coming up has gotten many worry about the authenticity of the statement.
Reacting to the petition a young lady who prefer to hide her identity said "Am force to believed the petition may be political influence, man in this part of the world can go any length if politics is involved. How will the state government eat money that must surely be accounted for, however i don't trust anybody once money is involved but is good there's investigation going on,integrity should be maintain so that we know the truth."
However there's speculation around the state that some pensioners are yet to receive their pensions, which have left them in worse conditions and some have responded to the rumors as it is only those with minor problems that are still owed.
It was gathered also the state has began urgent screening exercise for pensioners in the state who are suspected to be owed . Few of them were spotted in the treasury office around Mary slessor way, Calabar looking so hungry and worried.
Misappropriation of public funds is often peculiar to Elected Political office holders in Nigeria. An act that have left many Nigerians in suffering mode, incomplete projects and unemployment opportunities. Despite how some have been convicted or others facing arrest and trial in court there's still alleged reports of misappropriation of funds.
