NIGERIAN TEACHERS JOIN THE WORLD TO CELEBRATE TEACHER'S DAY

Teachers in Nigeria have join their world counterpart to celebrate world teacher's day set aside on every 5 October to honour the hearty contributions of teachers to the society. It is a work free today for teachers and has various pattern of celebration.

In Nigeria such day brings to the mind of most teachers and the society that their reward is indeed in heaven as some of them come together with empty stomachs to perform different roles in celebration of the day. Match-pass, football game, volley ball, conferences with diluted promises are some activities that herald the celebration .In some schools, Teachers contribute a token to the cooking of food by the female teachers and eaten generally among themselves with wine mostly palm wine in presidential as part of the celebration While Teachers in Some areas just remain at home bringing in mind their youthful dream of being greater at this level.

Teaching profession is one of the least attractive in Nigeria despite how vital it is to the society. The pay size despite how small it is often comes late by the government and even private employers. All these have contributed to kill the motivation in most teachers to carry out their jobs effectively and hinder most people from going into the profession even those that end up there do it as just the available and not the desirable.

Some of the teachers have expressed their feelings on this day describing it as a grateful honour but pray they get remembered not just in a day but very well at month end. One of the Teachers i caught up expressed readiness for the continues stay in the profession. "Today is a great day in the life of every teacher,i woke up feeling special because i understand what it means to be honour by the world. Whoever initiated this was indeed a teacher. As a teacher, we are the second parents of children and despite whatever a parent still remain a parent till death. Am proud of my profession and nothing is worth making me regret,i encourage my colleague out there to put in their best always."

He jokingly ended with "buy me a bottle of wine please, its my day." Other teachers were of a different opinion that there is nothing really to celebrate until a teacher is treated like a Medical Doctor.

Another Respondent encouraged discipline among teachers with the thus view ,"Happy teachers' day to all the qualified and not the certified teachers who do not know what it means by teaching.  Wrong people have entered into educational system. A teacher told me: 'I can never repeat a child in my class because the parents paid school fees and in third term examination I set simple questions and also those who cannot answer questions I keep them with brilliant pupils for them to copy so that they can pass.' I asked her which school are you teaching? when she told me I needed to tell her that she is a disgrace to teacherhood. A real teacher teaches a child to be educated and not to pass exam because when a child is educated the knowledge lives with the child but if you teach to pass exam only when the child leaves the class the child forget everything that was taught."

As Nigerians Teachers join in the celebration today, there is need for improved existence in dignity of labour. They called on the government and significant others to add more value to the profession. The government on their part through the minister of Education Adamu Adamu have assured of their continuous care for teachers. He further appreciate the teachers effort in building the nation and wish them a peaceful celebration.

The criteria for becoming a teacher in Nigeria now is four years of learning in university and three years in College of Education as required by the Teacher's Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), a recognized body of teachers.
