SENATE MANDATE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO LIAISE WITH WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION ON MONKEYPOX

Nigeria Senate have mandate the federal government to liaise with world health organization and other significant agencies to ensure the treatment and prevent continues spreading of monkeypox viral disease.

Making the concern during a senate plenary session today in Abuja, Senator Ali Wakili representing Bauchi south said it has become necessary following the speed at which the disease is spreading. The house adopted the pray and urged the federal government to extend hands to known health agencies with immediacy from the time of the decision.

Similar call was made in the National Assembly urging the federal government to begin awareness on the control and prevention of monkeypox disease to the general public through different platforms.

The awaken mandate is coming after the disease is reported to have spread to states like Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos and rumored to be in Kwara, Edo, Oyo States within a space of one week after it was discovered in Bayelsa.

The viral disease transmits through contact with infected bush Animals like Monkey and from man to man is still unknown to many Nigerians both in the city and villages. Many still indulge in eating their bush animals with the believed they are uncontaminated while some have mistaken Monkeypox to be a new military operation or new entertainment vibe.

Nigerians have expressed worries about the rate at which the disease is spreading and appealed to the Federal Government not to sleep over it else the entire nation will be affected. Speaking worrisomely Mr Oboh Johnson gave his thoughts as "The government should not wait or relax because monkeypox is not a killer disease,any disease can kill as long it is a disease. Am yet to see any moves from the federal government even with the level of it spray. What is a government for if not in situation like this...., we must not wait for all to be infected, one Nigerian infected is equivalent to the entire nation."

Mr oboh added that "a good government don't wait for the senate or significant others to remind them of immediate actions on a dreaded virus like this."
It is worthy to note that even the senate is part of the "ruling government ".

Others pleaded with relevant authorities and non governmental agencies to bring possible measures to control the spray of the disease that has no cure or known vaccine for it treatment. The unavailability of a known cure for monkeypox has contribute to make it more worrisome in the minds of Nigerians. However two persons were reported to be treated and discharged by the Chief Medical Director of Niger Delta Teaching Hospital located in Bayelsa state.

The entire public is warn against the spray of untrue news about the outbreak that will create panicked and shall be punished if arrested. However be informed and well guided that such outbreak comes with speculation.



In another news from today's senate plenary the senate also received a letter from President Buhari to approved the borrowing of $3.0 billion to finance the 2017 budget and other domestic projects.
