COURT SENTENCE HANDBAG SNATCHERS TO DEATH IN ANAMBRA STATE
A high Court sitting in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State has sentence two young men who snatched a handbag belonging to Chinonye Ogujiuba to death.
The young men identified as Osadebe Eze and Ikenna Obi were arrested by the police on the 2nd of February this year for looting a handbag from miss Chinonye at gun point.
The suspects were three in number but one Anene Maduka was set free for no substantial evidence connecting him to the crime.
The hand bag as reported contained N10,000, Women Makeup kits, Nokia torchlight phone also known to Nigerians as "Nokia escort me night toilet".
Delivery the judgment, Justice Okey Maduka said the evidence presented before the court find the duo guilty of robbery and sentence them to death by hanging or firing squad.
The verdict got the criminals and families weeping and lamenting on it "strangeness". The counsels to the convicted suspects made it known they would appeal the ruling.
Nigerians have reacted on social media with expression of shock about the verdict and are of the opinion it should have been a prison term while others personally upheld the judgment as it would go a long way to deter break down of law.
One Mr Joe said "Everyone is surprised of the ruling, No we shouldn't be, it is a sign that our Judicial system is now a judicial system. The verdict was passed after investigation cum trial,you never can tell where and what else they did. The court has stood for what she is main for,if they were set free, abuses and allegation of bribery would have set in. Am of the opinion if this system is maintain,crime will reduce to it minimal."
Mr Joe added that "from the news and alleged happenings around Nigeria,its obvious the security and significant others now have zero tolerance for crime. If you are current, you would agree."
The verdict is first of it kind in this present Nigeria society and most have vented ignorance when death sentence became the penalty for pick pocketing. They expressed alleluia hopes it would be applicable to embezzlement of public office funds as such is a major contributor to alleged robbery incidents.
Some indigenes of Anambra state dismissed utterly alleged reports the owner of the handbag is a relative of the judge.
