STRAY BULLET KILLED JUST GRADUATED STUDENT

A female student of Banking and Finance in Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State has been killed from a stray bullet while celebrating her graduation.

The student identified as Uloko Lawrenta Apaume was shot dead on the 3rd of November in her hostel by a vigilante attached to the polytechnic.

The vigilantes as reported on social media were invited by the hostel landlord to maintain order during the celebration of the fresh graduates but the invitation became the death of Lawrenta. 

The vigilante is reported to have joined the students in celebration and shot on the air repeatedly while the students cheered in wild happiness but a stray bullet caught up with Lawrenta on her chest.

She was confirmed dead in the hospital nearer to the school. Auchi students have protested the accidental gruesome murder of their mate. They called on the school management to effect reforms in the law that allows vigilante to walk about with Gun in the school as most of them are not well trained.

Some students described Lawrenta demise as "untimely painful" to her family, lecturers and friends. They dismissed earlier speculations she was involved in cultism,saying it was those vested with the trust to protect them that inturn contributed to her death.

A student who spoke without revealing her identity said "Lawrenta demise is so painful, she would be greatly miss but let's call a frog a frog despite how sad the situation is. Her death wasn't deliberate,it was an accident, she's just a victim of careless circumstance. The Vigilantes were invited there by the students who were happy instead of cautioning them to stop shooting. It is a lesson, Let's work harmoniously to bring peace".

Alleged reports has it the vigilante who shot Lawrenta was drunk. He has been suspended by the school management who are working with Edo State police command in investigating the matter.

Security personnel are in Nigerian Universities because of alleged practice of cultism, prostitution, exams malpractice and other social vices.

Alleged Statistics has it at least 10 final year students are killed yearly in Nigeria.
