DELAYED ALLOWANCE: CORPS MEMBERS PLEAD WITH THE PUBLIC FOR DONATION
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Members have lamented about the non payment of monthly allowance for over two months by the Federal Government.
The Coppers who were last paid in September expressed very hard conditions of surviving without the monthly stipends that is even not enough to take care of their needs when paid.
Most of the Corpers as gathered now go to bed so hungry while others depend on their families and family of where they find themselves for survival.
The Corps Members pleaded with private individuals and donor agencies to come to their help as the conditions of living is above the limit of barring.
Making the appeal on behalf of others in Calabar, A female Corp Member who gave her name as Corper Blessing said "Things are so hard, my food is finished, Transportation to my place of Primary Assignment is not even available, I walk hungry about,We walk hungry about. The most frustrating aspect is, we don't know the reasons for the delay in payment of Allowance for over two months now."
"Please am begging kind hearted Nigerians and Donor groups to come our help. We are now like orphanage homes, please help a Corper in your area, most of them may not have the boldness to request for help but please just assist us and save lives."
The non payment of allowance is alleged to have gotten some female corps members involving in Coded prostitution to survive while some male hit the road as taxi drivers,Okada Riders and mini jobs to survive.
However, Some kind hearted Nigeria have donated food, kerosene and a small amount of money to corpers in their respective places of primary assignment.
The donations which are done privately have gone a long way to boast livelihoods of the Corps Members.
It was gathered the recent passed out Corps members are equally affected. Some are yet to leave their places of primary assignment back to their various lovely homes because of "financial e no there" while others managed back homes with just the NYSC uniform and not even "agege bread" to sadly boast of.
As usual in the nature of Nigerians to make comedy out of any opportunity, this was not left out as well. It has been said all over the Social Media like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram that "Corpers Allowance don turn to menstruation. Guys just dey call how far you don see your own?"
Some Parents and relatives of the Corps Members have called on the Federal Government to pay their wards OR to eradicate the scheme if payment has become so difficult.
They added that the implications of owing allowance result not just to hunger for the corps members but hatred for the Service Scheme both in them and others warming to go in, All which would be against the objectives of the NYSC scheme.
