JUNGLE JUSTICE HAPPENING LIVE IN EDIM OTOP,CALABAR
Edim Otop Area of Calabar Municipal is experiencing another jungle justice. The area have been under robbery attacks by hoodlums for some time now resulting to people packing out for safety but normalcy was restored after three were burnt alive in June this year.
The vigilantes in the area have worked tirelessly to get Edim Otop residents living peacefully and going about their normal life with stern advise that youths should get a living at least by learning handwork. This message was heeded by all except for this particular young man in his twenties who is alleged to be moving about at night with gun looting residents of their phones and money.
The search for him has been on by the vigilante and he was caught this morning while eating in his girlfriend house. The vigilante did not hesitate to set him ablaze bringing the number of people killed in the area for the past three months to four.
The arrival of police didn't safe any situation as they were late.
One Residents who shared her ordeal in the hands of the young man said "I was coming back from work when i ran into this young man lying shamefully dead there,he pointed a gun at me and looted me of the money i made that day and my phone. I was surprised that such thing is still happening after three were burnt months ago. It was a bad day for me but i left every thing in the hands of God. When i got home my neighbor told me he narrowly escape the young man who is a dreaded cultist in the area."
Some residents lament that the most painful aspect of it is knowing those boys involved in such unwelcome acts stays in the area, grow in the area and are even fed by most people in the area yet at night time, they become animals and loot them of valuables.
One elder in the Area known as Obong Akparawa disclose that "Its worrisome and painful to loose what you suffered to buy with your money. Robbery acts are on the increase because our children are now so involved in cultism, illicit drugs intake has increase in the society, laziness towards work has increase, weapons are posses unlawfully. As far as i must commend the police, i also encourage them to work harder. Am not in support of Jungle Justice but it is the product of Injustice or Failure on the part of our judicial system and the police."
A market woman who said she was robbed of her waterleaf money on her way back from the market said " Right Jungle justice is the best, let whoever is caught in the act die because if they are handed over to the police they will be back in seven days time to cause more havoc. "
Residents in the area have pleaded with the authority to beef up security around Edim Otop that is becoming like a terror zone to prevent further jungle justice as innocent ones may be burnt alive someday. It is gathered that Vigilante move about monthly demanding for security fee of one thousand naira from compounds and five hundred naira from shops located in the area. An act some residents have criticized because it is too much and pray it should be at least once in three months considering the high number of compounds and shops located in the area.
Today's incident has caused traffic jam in the area and commuters were spotted taking alternative routes.
Edim Otop is located in Calabar Municiapal towards Akpabio local government area of Cross River State.
