HIGH TENSION CABLE KILLS THREE IN CALABAR SOUTH

A high tension cable has killed three residents of No 14 Adak Uko street in Calabar South after it landed on the roof of the building.

The high tension cable is said to have cut off at about 9pm on Monday after some officials of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN)worked on the very spot.

The attention of the Calabar PHCN  branch management was drawn to the default Cable following a report by Mr Richard Ikpeme, the landlord of the house. The landlord had complaint of often electric sparkles to the authority of PHCN but unfortunately the intended danger he was avoiding happened.

The high tension cable as reported by eye witness landed on the roof of the building setting it ablaze immediately. Three persons are reported dead as they try to run out for safety while others injured.

Among the deceased include a third year Engineering student of Cross River State University of Technology. The boy is reported to have tried to opened the protector at the door of his room to run out for safety but was electrocuted from the conductive power of metal.

The few injured are alleged to be receiving treatment at various affordable hospitals and at their costs. Properties were also lost to the sad incident. Some of the residents in the area expressed disappointment at Fire Service Staffs for "being irresponsible". It was gathered that calls were made to them but they excused their duty with non availability of water.

This is the second incident of High tension cable mayhem in Calabar this year. In April a high tension cable fell on the roof of a football viewing center killing about 20 persons and injured others during Manchester United game. Man United had sent condolence to the families of the affected victims.

A resident in Calabar Paul Akpan expressed worries about the incidents of repeated high tension cable mayhem and blamed the authorities for the acts.

Paul said "Each time i see Electricity cables in Nigeria whether connected or not i move far from it And people will laugh that am too afraid,No its not fear but because i don't trust the efficiency of PHCN. We have hardly hear of high tension cables cutting off in Western countries despite they created this.what does that tell you? Nigerians uses substandard materials even knowing how dangerous this is to public. they are not bothered as long as they have fat cuts. Honestly the evil spirit of a Nigerian is a Nigerian. Imagine just being in your house with full confidence of safety, just only for your life to be cut short by the least unexpected. May their souls rest in peace, May God accept their Souls. Amen."

The management of power holding company of Nigeria expressed regrets over the death of it customers and warn against erecting structures under high tension cables.

It is notable that majority of buildings use for business and otherwise in calabar are located under high tension cables. Many have blamed the town planning agency for issuing approval on such buildings. They alleged that all it takes to erect a building under such places is to give out a "brown envelop" to the significant authority. An act which they described as dangerous because of the risk of high tension cable.
