MONKEYPOX HIT AKWA IBOM & RIVER STATES

The viral disease call Monkeypox ravaging Bayelsa state has hit Uyo,the capital of Akwa Ibom State. The outbreak which was announced last week in Bayelsa state with indications it started from one of the infected residents getting in contact with an infected monkey has affected many in the area and fast spreading across the country.

The case in Akwa Ibom state was confirmed by the state government during the weekend. The infected person is said to have been admitted in the hospital a week ago but nurses could not ascertain the type of disease. When it was realized its monkeypox efforts were slightly initiated to sugarcoat the announcement as a measure of avoiding panicked but became so obvious to let the populace know to ensure preventive measures.

However Panicked has grim residents of Akwa Ibom state following the news and the usual safety tip of avoiding handshake, hugs and consumption of bush animals have been adopted even before advised.

Nigerians have blamed the Federal Government for not doing much to combat the spray of the virus. Speaking in Calabar one lady who spoke angrily said "our government is sleeping over such urgent issue,it can only remind and appreciate in me the efforts of the former president Goodluck Jonathan in combating the dreaded killer Ebola virus. Probably if it was now, Only Nigerians in safe haven would  be left alive. I urge the government to put the best,take it as a national emergency. The fact that it does not kill should not be reason to sleep. Its an insult to the country,its a tag on Nigerians and bet me very soon many borders would be shot from Nigerians."

The minister of Information Lai Mohammed had earlier debunked news of the provision of free health services by the government that resulted to the outbreak of the virus. He described the news as perpetrated by "political enemies". The minister did not state the government contributions or factual readiness so far to curtail the spread of the viral disease. Nigerians have appealed the way the present government respond to criticism should be the way they respond to health threatening issues like this.

News coming in has it there have been confirmed two cases of Monkeypox in River State and many others related with the infected persons are currently being contacted to be quarantine. Nurses and other health officials lament the absence of vaccines to treat infected persons leaving the infected in adject conditions.

On Friday the 6th of October the doctor and a 11 years old child infected with the disease in Bayelsa state were treated and discharged.

The general public have been advised to avoid panicked and go about their normal businesses with strict adherence to the preventive measures and report any suspected case to the nearest health centre.
