TWO PERSONS INFECTED WITH MONKEYPOX TREATED AND DISCHARGED

Earlier this week 12 Persons reported to be infected with MonkeyPox were quarantine in Bayelsa State as a safety measure for treatment and avoiding the spray of the virus.

Yesterday the Chief Medical Director of the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital Dimie Ogoina announced that the Doctor who was infected from attending to one of the infected patients which at that time it was unknown to be monkeypox has been treated and discharged along side an eleven years old girl.

The medical director also announced others infected were responding to treatment and will be discharge soonest. He advise the general public to report any suspected case of monkepox to the nearest health center.
MonkeyPox is a viral disease transmitted from infected monkeys cum bush animals to man. The disease can also be transmitted through contact with an infected man.

It outbreak in Bayelsa is the first in Nigeria since reported in Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970 after a failed research with monkeys. The outbreak in the state has hinder residents from shaking of hands and eating bush meats. Despite the obvious effects some bush meat sellers in the state were of a strong opinion that bush animals are innocent of the disease and even if they are infected the ones available for sale is an exception because it well prepared by them. They also lament poor sales within this period of the outbreak.

The CMD said the Doctor and the family of the eleven years old girl treated of the disease thanked God the master healer. Their identity was not made known to the public to avoid stigmatization. The Minister of Health Prof Isiaac Adewole from Osun State call for a preventive measure among residents in the state and the country at large.

Monkeypox is less fatal compare to Smallpox that claimed many lives in the 70s and it vaccine for treatment is kindly unknown as it was in the case of Ebola and this has risen suspicion about the origin of the animal associated diseases.
